Suzuki Griquas Power to 42–21 Victory over Bulls

The Suzuki Griquas produced a performance of power, precision, and belief to secure a 42–21 victory over the Vodacom Bulls at Tuine_Grizzleis Rugby Club on Sunday, 24 August 2025. It was a result that showcased not only individual brilliance but also the depth and unity of a side intent on making their mark in this year’s Currie Cup.

Strong Start from the Bulls, Stronger Response from Griquas

The home side made the early breakthrough when Stravino Jacobs dotted down, converted by Boeta Chamberlain. But far from rattled, the Griquas responded with composure.

Gurswin Wehr, whose speed and finishing would become a recurring theme, struck twice in quick succession to turn the tide. Soon after, captain Cebo Dlamini muscled his way over, giving us a commanding 21–7 halftime advantage.

Second Half: Depth and Dominance

The Griquas turned the screw after the interval. Wehr completed his hat-trick minutes into the second half, sparking celebrations.

But this was not a one-man show. The forwards imposed themselves on the contest, with Janco Uys scoring from a rolling maul and replacement Zane Bester powering over to extend the lead.

Despite being reduced to 14 men due to a red card for IG Prinsloo, the Griquas’ defensive structures held firm however with only 5 minutes left in the game the Bulls added two tries through Junior Pokomela and Katlego Letebele.

More Than Just Wehr’s Day

Wehr’s hat-trick rightly made headlines as well as sealed his man of the match, but this win was defined by collective effort:

  • The pack delivered a dominant display at the set-piece.

  • Halfbacks steered play with intelligence and composure.

  • Backline combinations created chances and kept the Bulls’ defense on the back foot.

Every department contributed to what may go down as one of the Griquas’ most complete performances of the season.

Semi-finals within reach

The result propels the Griquas into third place on the Currie Cup log, with 20 points in hand.

With the Cheetahs and Boland Cavaliers leading on 21 points, and the Golden Lions close behind on 16, we are firmly eyeing a semi-final. Next up, the Griquas face the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Friday, 29 August in a clash that could prove decisive for semi-final hosting rights.

Eyes on the Future

The win sends a clear message to the competition: the Griquas are here to contend. With a blend of speed, power, and tactical clarity, the team is growing stronger each week.

As the Currie Cup heats up, the Griquas will aim to carry this momentum into their next fixture and continue their surge toward the semifinals.
