Eastern Cape Foundations
Born in East London, Makata’s rugby journey began in one of South Africa’s most competitive schoolboy environments. He attended Stirling High School, where his natural pace and attacking instincts quickly set him apart.
His performances earned him selection for Border at the Craven Week in 2016 — a key milestone for any young South African player looking to break into the professional ranks.
Sharpened in Sevens
Makata’s next step saw him join the SA Rugby Sevens Academy, where his game evolved rapidly.
Sevens rugby demands precision, fitness, and composure under pressure — qualities Makata developed into strengths. His growth culminated in a call-up to the South Africa national rugby sevens team, where he made his debut on the international stage in 2019.
During his time in Sevens, he:
- Competed on the World Rugby Sevens Series
- Established himself as a powerful, direct runner
- Contributed to a squad that claimed gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2022
This period didn’t just elevate his profile — it refined his identity as a player.
Finding His Home at Griquas
At Suzuki Griquas, Makata has found the perfect environment to translate his Sevens instincts into the 15-man game.
Operating primarily on the wing, he brings a unique combination of:
- Explosive pace
- Physicality in contact
- Strong finishing ability
More than just a finisher, Makata has become a momentum player for Griquas — someone capable of shifting the energy of a match in a single moment.
His impact has been particularly evident in recent campaigns, where his contributions have played a key role in the team’s performances in the SA Cup.
Resilience and Mental Strength
Makata’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. A facial fracture in 2025 briefly sidelined him, but his return to action within weeks highlighted his resilience and commitment to the team.
It’s this mentality — the ability to respond, recover, and return stronger — that continues to define his contribution in the Griquas jersey.
More Than a Winger
While his pace often grabs attention, Makata’s value goes far deeper.
His Sevens background gives him:
- Exceptional spatial awareness
- Calmness in broken play
- The ability to read defensive structures
Combined with his physical approach, it makes him one of the most dangerous attacking threats in the Griquas backline.
Still Building
Now firmly established in Kimberley, Sako Makata continues to grow his influence within the Suzuki Griquas setup.
With experience at international level and a hunger to keep improving, he represents the kind of player Griquas rugby is built on — resilient, dynamic, and always ready to make an impact.
And when the moment opens up, even slightly, Makata has already shown he knows exactly what to do with it.
