Celebrating the Career of Tertius Kruger

Suzuki Griquas rugby has been blessed with players who embody resilience, passion, and a never-say-die attitude. One such player is Tertius Kruger, a centre whose name has become synonymous with commitment both on and off the field. As we reflect on his journey, we celebrate not just his rugby achievements but also the character and determination that made him a fan favourite.

From Randfontein to Rugby Glory

Born on 9 August 1993 in Randfontein, South Africa, Tertius quickly rose through the rugby ranks. Representing the SWD Eagles at youth level, he showcased his natural talent at Craven Week tournaments before moving on to Hoërskool Outeniqua and later Oudtshoorn High. His university years at the University of the Free State (UFS) were defining, as he became a standout for the UFS Shimlas, playing a crucial role in their first-ever Varsity Cup victory in 2015.

Professional Rugby Journey

Tertius made his professional debut for the Free State Cheetahs in 2015, before stints with the Griffons, Southern Kings, and an exciting chapter abroad with Hong Kong’s Sandy Bay. In 2017, his path brought him to Kimberley, where he would etch his name into Griquas history.

From the moment he pulled on the pou-blou jersey, Tertius became a central figure in the Griquas’ midfield. Known for his powerful running lines, solid defence, and ability to score from anywhere, he played a vital role in Currie Cup campaigns over the years. Fans will remember his spectacular tries – from his bonus-point effort against the Lions to his long-range strike against the Griffons. In March 2025, he proudly earned his 50th cap for the Griquas, a milestone that highlighted his consistency and loyalty.

Forced to Say Goodbye

Sadly, midway through the 2025 Currie Cup season, Tertius was forced into retirement at just 32 years old, following multiple concussions in a short space of time. By the time he hung up his boots, he had made 56 appearances for the Griquas, leaving behind a legacy of courage, professionalism, and heart.

More Than Just a Player

Tertius Kruger’s journey is a reminder that rugby is more than results on the scoreboard. It’s about dedication, teamwork, and the bonds formed along the way. He leaves behind memories of thrilling performances, inspiring younger players, and giving his all for the badge.

Thank You, Tertius

The Suzuki Griquas family extends heartfelt gratitude to Tertius for his years of service and sacrifice. Though his time on the field has come to an early end, his influence and example will continue to inspire future generations of Griquas players.

We salute you, Tertius – once a Griquas, always a Griquas.
