Meet the team: Thomas “Tom” Nel, Suzuki Griquas Center

Every season has a breakout story — a player who arrives quietly, works relentlessly, and suddenly finds himself in the biggest moments of the competition. For the Suzuki Griquas, Thomas “Tom” Nel is that story.

In just a matter of months, he has gone from university rugby standout to Currie Cup winner, carving out a name as one of the most exciting young backs to watch in Kimberley.

A Journey Rooted in Patience, Hard Work & Opportunity

Born in Johannesburg and raised in a boarding environment at Michaelhouse, Thomas Nel’s rugby foundation was built on discipline, structure and a deep love for the game. After school he joined the University of Cape Town, where his development accelerated rapidly.

At UCT he became a key part of the Ikey Tigers setup — first in the Young Guns and later in the senior Varsity Cup squad. Balancing academics with training, Nel’s calm confidence and strong work ethic made him stand out long before professional teams came calling.

From Varsity Cup Champion to Griquas Call-Up

2025 will always be remembered as the year everything changed for Nel.

He helped guide UCT to a Varsity Cup championship, playing a vital role in their campaign and gaining recognition as one of the competition’s most dependable backs. His composure, defensive reads and ability to slot into multiple positions made him invaluable.

Shortly after lifting the trophy, opportunity knocked.

The Suzuki Griquas needed backline cover, and Nel’s name was at the top of the list. What began as a short-term call-up quickly turned into something much bigger — a breakthrough.

A Season of Finals — Rugby History in the Making

In one of the most remarkable rises of the year, Thomas Nel achieved something incredibly rare:

He featured in a Varsity Cup Final, an SA Cup Final, and a Currie Cup Final — all in the same season.

For any player, let alone one in his first professional year, it’s a milestone that reflects both talent and temperament.

  • Varsity Cup Winner – UCT (2025)

  • SA Cup Finalist – Griquas (2025)

  • Currie Cup Champions – Griquas (2025)

These experiences have hardened him, sharpened him, and prepared him for what lies ahead.

What He Brings to the Peacock Blues

Standing at 186cm, Nel offers a combination every coach loves:

  • Physicality – Strong in contact and reliable on defence.

  • Versatility – Able to play centre or wing, giving the team depth when it’s needed most.

  • Decision-Making – Intelligent under pressure, calm with ball in hand.

  • Work Rate – Known for grafting in training and absorbing new systems quickly.

Off the field, he has embraced Kimberley’s community and culture, despite the nerves that come with moving to a new city. Teammates describe him as humble, hardworking, and eager to learn — qualities that show in every performance.

A Player on the Rise

What makes Tom Nel so exciting for the Griquas isn’t just what he has achieved — it’s what he is becoming. A young back with finals experience, a strong rugby brain, and the confidence to step up in big moments.

He represents what this team stands for: development, opportunity, and the hunger to grow.

As he continues to settle into his role, one thing becomes clear — the best of Thomas Nel is still to come, and the Suzuki Griquas faithful will be there to watch every step of the journey.
