Rugby in the Griqualand-West region has long been built on tradition, passion, and dedicated individuals who give their all to the game — both on and off the field. One such individual is Kat Swanepoel, whose lifelong commitment to rugby refereeing has helped shape the culture and standard of officiating in the province and beyond.

Kat has been a proud member of the Referee’s Association since 1989, serving as Chairman since 1998. His leadership journey began even earlier, acting as Secretary from 1994 to 1998, before stepping into the role of Development Officer and Referees Manager at Griqualand-West Rugby Union in 2008.

When BokSmart — SA Rugby’s national safety programme — was introduced, Kat took on the role of BokSmart Coordinator for the province, ensuring that referee safety standards and training were in line with national expectations. He is also the longest-serving member of the South African Rugby Referees Association (SARRA) Forum, representing Griquas among other provincial leaders. In 2012, his remarkable contribution was recognised with Honorary Membership by SARRA — a fitting tribute to decades of dedication.

The State of Refereeing Today

Despite the strong leadership and rich tradition, refereeing in the Griquas region is facing serious challenges. Numbers are dwindling, and fewer people are stepping forward to wear the whistle. The ideal referee is often a retired player who still wants to stay involved in the game — bringing experience and insight that can’t be taught.

But above all, refereeing is driven by passion. It’s a role done for the love of rugby, and it requires heart, commitment, and character.
