The afternoon began with a moving gesture: as the players prepared to take the field dressed in pink, they ran through a tunnel formed by cancer warriors and survivors. It was a powerful reminder that while rugby is about competition, it’s also about community, resilience, and fighting together for a cause far greater than the game itself.
A Strong Start Sets the Tone
From the opening whistle, the Griquas showed intent. Their forward pack dominated the collisions, setting a platform for quick, clean ball. This allowed the backline to find space and exploit gaps in Western Province’s defence. Early tries not only lifted the crowd but also put the visitors under scoreboard pressure.
Seven Tries and Slick Finishing
The Griquas crossed the try line seven times during the match, with six successful conversions by George Whitehead. Their attack was clinical, taking advantage of every opportunity. The interplay between backs and forwards kept Province guessing, while the Griquas’ pace on the wings punished any defensive lapse.
The seven tries came from a diverse cast: Albert Liebenberg powered over first, followed by a slick finish from Zane Bester, a darting break by Caleb Abrahams, a crash-through from Gurshwin Wehr, a strong close-range drive by Derik Pretorius, an opportunistic pick-and-go from Carl Els, and a late surge to the line from Thomas Bursey. With the boot, George Whitehead was clinical, slotting six out of seven conversions to keep the scoreboard ticking. Gurshwin Weir unleashed a massive hit that stopped Shilton van Wyk cold, bringing the home crowd to its feet.
Western Province managed three tries of their own but struggled to build momentum, often finding themselves pinned in their half by Griquas’ territorial kicking and aggressive defensive line speed.
Home Advantage in Full Effect
Suzuki Stadium once again proved to be a fortress for the Griquas. The Kimberley faithful created an electric atmosphere, urging their team forward with every phase of play. The players responded in kind, feeding off the energy and producing one of their most complete performances of the season so far.
Community Spirit Rewarded
A huge thanks you to Suzuki South Africa for sponsoring the cash prizes for local schools who showed up in force. We had a great turnout from the community. This week Elizabeth Conradie School came in their numbers and won a huge cash prize for their outstanding support and enthusiasm with banners, balloons and cheers; Boys High followed closely in a spirited second place. We are proud to be part of this initiative and encouraging community involvement within Kimberley.
