Meet the team: Mnombo Zwelendaba, Inside Centre

Every so often a player emerges who changes the trajectory of a team — not just by their talent, but by the way they carry themselves, inspire teammates, and deliver when it matters most. In 2025, Mnombo Zwelendaba has become one such player. As outside-centre for the Suzuki Griquas, he’s proven that he’s more than a promising name — he’s a match-winner and crowd favourite.

A Strong Rugby Foundation

Born on 21 February 2000, Mnombo’s rugby journey began at Selborne College, a school renowned for shaping tough, intelligent players. From early on, he showed the physicality and instinct that set him apart, eventually progressing into the Western Province youth and senior systems before his career brought him to Kimberley.

At 1.86m and 97kg, Zwelendaba is built for the midfield battle — but it’s his timing, decision-making and ability to rise to the occasion that have truly defined his game.

A Breakout with the Griquas

Joining the Griquas in 2024 proved to be a career-shifting decision. What followed was a season that not only elevated his name, but rewrote Griquas history.

2025 Highlights:

  • Key contributor in the Griquas’ first Currie Cup title in 55 years.

  • Scored a crucial try in the final, cementing his place in Griquas folklore.

  • Awarded both Backline Player of the Year and Player of the Year for 2025.

  • Recognised by fans, teammates and coaches for his humility, consistency and leadership qualities.

Mnombo’s performances were as explosive as they were composed — powerful carries, crisp defence, and an ability to create momentum in crucial moments. He became the kind of player you could build an attack around, and the kind of teammate you could trust under pressure.

Who He Is Off the Field

While his on-field presence is intimidating, off the field Mnombo is described as humble, thoughtful and driven. He puts in extra hours at the gym and pushes himself behind the scenes. He values team culture deeply and often speaks about the importance of community support in Kimberley — especially during the Currie Cup run.

Legacy in the Making

Though still early in his professional career, Zwelendaba is already shaping a legacy at the Griquas. His impact in the 2025 season was more than individual brilliance — it symbolised belief. Grit.

He has quickly become:

  • A leader by example,

  • A centre with both muscle and intelligence, and

  • A player who represents the identity of modern Griquas rugby — tough, hard-working and fearless.

Why Griquas Fans Love Him

Mnombo embodies everything Kimberley rugby stands for: resilience, heart and hunger for history-making moments. Whether he is breaking tackles, securing the midfield, or finishing big-match tries, he plays with a sense of purpose that inspires teammates and supporters alike.

And as the Griquas continue to build on their new golden chapter, it’s clear that Mnombo Zwelendaba is not just part of the story — he’s helping write it.
