A Partnership Built on Progress
Over recent seasons, the collaboration between Griquas and the Stormers has seen players move between the two teams under loan agreements, gaining valuable exposure and game time. For Griquas, the partnership reinforces the union’s role as a strong development environment, where players are prepared not only to perform locally, but to succeed on bigger stages.
Griquas head coach Pieter Bergh says the agreement is about doing what is best for the player, while strengthening South African rugby as a whole.
“This partnership gives our players an opportunity to grow beyond the Currie Cup environment,” Bergh said. “When a player has earned the chance to play at URC level, it’s important that we support that journey. It benefits the individual and, in the long run, it benefits Griquas rugby.”
Dylan Maart’s Next Step
Dylan Maart’s loan to the Stormers is a clear example of the partnership working as intended. After playing an important role in Griquas’ domestic campaign, Maart has been rewarded with the opportunity to compete against elite opposition in the URC.
Known for his pace, work ethic and consistency, Maart has made a seamless transition into the Stormers environment, gaining exposure to the demands of international club rugby.
Bergh believes the move will be invaluable for Maart’s development.
“Dylan has worked incredibly hard and fully deserves this opportunity,” Bergh said. “Training and playing in a URC setup will challenge him in new ways, and when he comes back to us, he’ll be a better, more experienced player.”
Proud of the Pathway
While Dylan will continue to represent the Stormers during his loan period, he does so with the full support of the Griquas. Opportunities such as this are a source of pride for the union, reinforcing the belief that strong performances in Kimberley can open doors to the highest levels of the game.
The Griquas–Stormers partnership remains an important part of the broader South African rugby ecosystem — creating opportunity, building depth, and ensuring that talent developed locally is given the chance to flourish on bigger stages.
“We’re proud that players can come through Griquas, perform, and earn chances like this,” Bergh added. “Our job is to create an environment where players can develop and where doors open when they’re ready.”
As the URC season continues, Griquas will be watching Dylan Maart’s progress with pride. His journey is a reflection of the values of Griquas rugby — hard work, resilience, and the belief that talent developed in Kimberley can succeed at the highest level.
