Griquas Stars Shine With National Recognition at SA Rugby Awards

Griquas Rugby is thrilled to celebrate two of its finest being recognised on the national stage at the 2025 SA Rugby Awards. George Whitehead and Gurswin Wehr were both nominated for the prestigious Carling Currie Cup Premier Division Player of the Year Award, underlining their outstanding contributions to our campaign this season.

The SA Rugby Awards are one of the highlights of the South African rugby calendar, acknowledging excellence across both international and domestic competitions. The nominees are selected based on performance, impact and consistency throughout the season — and to have two Suzuki Griquas players on that list is a significant achievement.

Recognition for Exceptional Performances

George Whitehead delivered an outstanding Currie Cup season, playing a central role in Griquas’ success through his composure, accuracy and tactical awareness at fly-half. A calm presence in pressure moments, Whitehead consistently steered the team with intelligent game management, effective territorial kicking and reliable goal-kicking. His ability to control the tempo of matches and make sound decisions under pressure proved invaluable throughout the campaign, while his leadership on and off the field set the standard within the squad. His nomination for the Carling Currie Cup Premier Division Player of the Year Award is a fitting acknowledgement of his influence and consistency across the season.

Operating on the wing, Gurswin Weir enjoyed a standout Currie Cup campaign, establishing himself as one of the most dangerous attacking threats in the competition. Known for his speed, physicality and eye for the try line, Weir consistently made an impact through strong carries, clinical finishing and a high work rate on both sides of the ball. His ability to influence matches was highlighted by several decisive performances throughout the season, including key try-scoring contributions that shifted momentum in Griquas’ favour. Combined with his defensive commitment and willingness to get involved across the field, Weir’s consistency and impact have rightfully earned him national recognition and a nomination for the Carling Currie Cup Premier Division Player of the Year Award.

A Proud Moment for Griquas Rugby

The Carling Currie Cup Premier Division Player of the Year category this year also includes talents such as Donavan Don from the Sanlam Boland Kavaliers, placing our duo firmly among the elite performers in South African domestic rugby.

This recognition is not only about individual brilliance, but also about what it says for Griquas Rugby as a whole — that our players can compete with the best in the country and be acknowledged on a national platform. It reflects the standards set by the coaching staff, the culture within the squad, and the passion of our supporters.

Looking Ahead

The winners of the SA Rugby Awards will be revealed in due course, but already, having two nominees in a competitive field is something the entire Griquas family can be proud of. We congratulate George Whitehead and Gurswin Wehr on these significant nominations and thank them for representing Griquas with pride, resilience and professionalism.

Meet the team: Ebune “Mango / Baby Rhino” Ngundue – Power, Potential and Heart in the Front Row

If there’s one thing every championship team needs, it’s raw power up front — the kind that shifts scrums, dents defensive lines and sets the tone for 80 minutes. For the Suzuki Griquas, one of the newest sources of that power comes in the form of Ebune Moango Ngundue, affectionately known as “Mango” or “Baby Rhino.”

A prop with huge potential and even bigger heart, Ngundue arrives in Kimberley ready to take his opportunity and make his mark in Peacock Blue.
