Griquas Outplay Sharks with Second-Half Comeback to Secure 26–17 Victory

The Suzuki Griquas delivered yet another thrilling performance in Kimberley as they overcame a halftime deficit to beat the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV 26–17 in the Currie Cup. In front of a passionate home crowd at Suzuki Stadium, the team showed grit and determination. What started as a cagey, hard-fought contest swung dramatically in the second half, with the Griquas’ relentless pressure and clever decision-making turning the balance of play in our favour.

Trailing 7–10 at the break, the men from Kimberley refused to let the game slip away. Instead, they came out firing in the second half, turning pressure into points and capitalising on the Sharks’ lapses in discipline. Every penalty, every turnover, and every opportunity was met with intensity and hunger — the kind of rugby that has become a trademark of this Griquas side.

The Sharks XV looked sharp early on, edging ahead with a narrow halftime lead, but their inability to keep composure cost them dearly. The Griquas were ruthless, punishing mistakes and using the home crowd’s energy to fuel a spirited comeback.

The final whistle confirmed it: Griquas 26, Sharks 17 — another result to be proud of in a season that’s gaining real momentum. Not only is this victory vital to the log standings but it also reinforced their reputation as one of the hardest-working, most resilient teams in the competition.

Community Spirit at Suzuki Stadium

The game wasn’t just about rugby — it was about Kimberley coming together to celebrate sport, fun, and community. Schools from across the city were invited to join the crowd, bring their best gees, and cheer on the Griquas.

After a day filled with noise, colour, and passion, Roodepan High School emerged as the overall winner of the Suzuki Griquas Group Schools Competition of the day, walking away with the R10 000 prize for their unmatched energy in the stands. Kimberley Boys High claimed second place, proudly taking home R5 000 for their efforts.

Fans were also treated to a Suzuki box car race at halftime, with teams showcasing creativity and speed. The winners claimed R1 000 in cash, while the runners-up earned vouchers for a delicious meal at The Heights restaurant.

Eyes on the Road Ahead

While this victory was a big boost, the Griquas know that the road ahead is going to test them even further. The next three away fixtures — against the Bulls, Cheetahs, and Lions — will be absolutely vital.

All three sides are clear contenders, and if we want to stay in the hunt, sharp game discipline and meticulous preparation will be non-negotiable. The grit shown against the Sharks will need to be matched with focus and composure in every minute of those clashes.

The momentum is building, the spirit is strong, and with Kimberley behind them, the Griquas are ready for the challenge.
